The Red Sox Are Set To Meet With Pete Alonso On Tuesday And Let's See If This Organization Is Actually Serious About The Offseason

And away we go!

It's MLB Winter Meetings time, and the Red Sox are doing some big game hunting.

Jon Heyman went on MLB Network Monday to tell everyone that free agent slugger Pete Alonso would make the trip to Orlando on Tuesday to meet with the Red Sox and Orioles.

I guess he lives like an hour and a half away. Probably worth the three-hour, round-trip commute to try and secure a small fortune in free agency.

Especially since he could not secure that big bag last year. He ended up doing the same thing Alex Bregman did with the Red Sox - sign a deal with a player option that allowed him to jump back into free agency again this year.

You'd think he'd have a pretty robust market. He played in all 162 games for the Mets this past season. His 41 doubles led the league. Had a very solid .871 OPS. Got a bunch of MVP votes in a year he was an All-Star and won the Silver Slugger award. But there's some buzz that a robust market might not be there for the slugger.

I guess I don't get it?

Seems like he'd be at the top of the wish list for any team looking for a first baseman and are trying to compete in 2026.

Since 2021, Alosno's 195 home runs are the fourth most in all of baseball. His 557 RBIs are good for second in all of baseball during that time. The Red Sox traded their leading slugger to the Giants last year and are in desperate need of power in the middle of their order. It's stating the obvious to say he'd be a massive upgrade for the Sox.

Alonso has reportedly told friends that the Red Sox are "high" on his list of free agency destinations. His wife is from Quincy, and they actually met when he was playing on the Cape in 2015. Maybe Craig Breslow has an ally in the Alonso Family that can help get a deal done.

I've pushed for the Red Sox to sign Kyle Schwarber, but the right-handed bat of Alonso probably makes him a better fit for the Red Sox lineup and Fenway Park.

I'm trying not to get too excited, given the Red Sox have been 'interested' in a million players they never ended up signing. And if there is a real market for Alonso, is Red Sox ownership willing to pay top-dollar? I'm not convinced.

But as the Winter Meetings get going, there's a clear path to an 'A+' Offseason for Breslow and the team.

1. Bring back Alex Bregman.

2. Sign Alonso or Schwarber to replace the power you lost in trading Devers.

3. Trade an OF (Jarren Duran) for an upgrade at a position of need (#2 pitcher).

I complain about the Red Sox. A lot. But if they hit on those three items, even I would have to say they nailed the offseason.

On the flipside, if Bregman walks and the team fails to add a power bat, it will be a true failure.

Tuesday is a big day for the organization, as part of a crucial offseason. The team keeps saying they know they have more work to do after losing to the Yankees in the playoffs and that they know this is their "window of contention." Adding Alonso to the lineup would show the fans they are men of their word. Or is it men of their words, plural? Not sure.

I am sure Alonso would look good in the Red Sox lineup. Let's hope the team agrees.
