Take Me Home, Country Roads: Marshall/WVU Soccer Ended With A Game-Winning Goal, A Fan Shoving Players Off A Wall And A Brouhaha In The Stands
We had ourselves a good old fashioned rivalry game in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament semifinals. That's right. WVU and Marshall are in the Sun Belt in soccer and both programs are pretty damn good. You're looking at two ranked teams, rivalry game, all that stuff. Hilarious that men's soccer Sun Belt league consists of Kentucky, South Carolina, WVU, Marshall, James Madison, UCF, Georgia State, Old Dominion and Coastal Carolina. Sure. That's a conference that makes sense.
Anyways, that goal, a PK with 36 seconds left in double overtime sent Marshall to the finals. Love golden goal, need that back in World Cup and tournaments like that. But it's what happened after. You think you can just walk into this guy's WVU stadium, celebrate with your own people and get away with it? Not so fast.
First off, pretty sure everyone would agree this guy sucks. You can't be pushing off a wall and then back down from a fight. I'd even say he's a pussy. If you want to cheap shot a guy celebrating, be ready to throw hands. You can't be pointing at your WVU shirt, acting tough and the moment a guy charges at you swinging wildly, back away with your hands up. If you want to be a shitbag, be a shitbag. Fair play by the Marshall fan going at him. Protect your boys by any means necessary.
What I will say is Marshall won me over with this move:
No-brainer to do this when your rival has a song like Country Roads. You win in double overtime, you celebrate however you want on their field. Back to the fan, I think you gotta let a couple swings in. That man came running down from multiple rows and delivered a Powerhouse Hobbs shoulder to the guy on the wall. That's worth a fight. Don't think any Marshall fan or player should have gotten in trouble if escalated.
