Team Blue Just Got Smoked in the Writer Cup And Most of the Blame Goes to Captain Ryan Whitney

There are Writer Cup spoilers below - SPOLIERS. - Mut

As someone firmly on Team Whit, that was a painful headline to write. But as the 2025 Writer Cup comes to a close, there's really no other way to spin it.

I admittedly don't watch a lot of creator golf content online. But the Writer Cup has Kirk and a bunch of people I know and like. And it was being played in Massachusetts, so I was 100% invested as a viewer from the jump.

The result was a blowout win for Team White and Captain Riggs. Like the actual Ryder Cup, Riggs and his team will go down as winners. And Captain Whitney will be left wondering where it all went so so so wrong for he and his team.

I'm happy to explain it to both him and you right here and now.

1. The Draft

Whit won the right to draft first. He took Kirk, which at the time felt like a very sharp play. But as I said last week on The Kirk Minihane Show, was there any chance that Riggs would have actually taken Kirk himself? There's been some real tension between Kirk and Riggs for a few months. PLUS, Riggs has three different Fore Play teammates to choose from if Whit had say, drafted Francis No. 1 overall. Which, looking back on it, he should have done. Team Blue could have had Whit, Francis, and Kirk as the foundation of their team. Maybe Whit was always taking Kirk, Yandle, and Biz? Also, did Whit know that PFT was battling an injury when he drafted him? Kirk was worthy of the No.1 Pick, but a little game theory may have given Team Blue an all-star lineup.

2. Lack of Support for Teammates

As Kirk and Yandle were coming back to win their match in Writer Cup Episode Five, Team Blue was nowhere to be found. Captain Riggs ensured that Team White was there to support their teammates who were still out on the course - we can't say the same for Captain Whitney.

He also got into it with his own teammate in the singles matches. Playing alongside Big Cat, he told Dan to concede a putt that he probably should not have conceded. Big Cat seemed rattled by the whole thing and proceeded to lose to Dave. Big Cat questioned Whitney on the call for the next hole or so and seemed bothered by the way it went down. No doubt that it's hard to be a playing captain in an event like this - I can see why Keegan Bradley decided against it for Team USA.

The Captain sets the tone. Not being out there to support Team Blue set a bad one.

3. His own poor play
As I mentioned, it's tough to balance the responsibilities of a Captain with the demands of playing competitive golf at a high level. This was the least of the three major issues for Whit and Team Blue.

But boy, did Whit pick a bad time to have his game go in the shitter. He still would have beaten me that day, but not Riggs. Or Dave. Or Kirk. Or Francis. Maybe Big Cat.

It's okay, Whit, they only compile lowlights of real athletes on the Internet.

There are still two more matches - sound like they'll be on the Fore Play page at some point. Looking forward to watching those. In the end, the final score was lopsided, but it was an entertaining watch.

And give Whit credit - he took the blame as the trophy was being handed over to Team White. He claimed he would be quitting The Unnamed Show to focus on golf, but he'd better be back this Thursday to talk about this with Dave and Kirk.

Hopefully, he gets his chance at redemption in two years at the next Writer Cup. As a Team Whit guy, I'll be rooting him on.
