Ohioans Are Upset As The Guardians Game 5 Is At The Same Time As The Buckeyes vs. Oregon Game On Saturday Night
This seems cruel, to be honest. The Guardians haven't been able to get a First Pitch after 9 am this entire series, and now, because the Yankees finished off the Royals early, they finally get an 8 pm start......on the very same night that Ohio State plays against Oregon in the Game of the Year.
Picking between these two games is the most difficult selection that Ohioans will have to make this Fall. Now don't get me wrong: if you don't have multiple TVs in your living room / basement by now, you need to enter the 21st century. But the fact that these two monumental events for the great state of Ohio are happening simultaneously offers multiple problems, led off for me the point that I cannot go to the ALDS Game 5. I went to Game 1 in Cleveland. I went to Game 2 in Cleveland. And I think it's only right that I see this one out. But how can I do that when I won't even be able to have eyes on my Buckeyes? It's not just a big game. It's also the fact that I have a 10 marshmallow Peeps per Oregon point bet I have to deal with…
So yes, I will be splitting my attention between the two games. But I hope the fans at the Guardians game won't be? We've got Tarik Skubal on the bump for the Tigers, and we'll need all hands on deck to make sure he doesn't go another 7 scoreless with a million strikeouts. We can't have fans on their phones trying to check the Buckeyes score while Skubal is on the Pitch Com. Maybe the Guardians can put a constant score tracker on the video board at The Jake? But I don't even love that.
Can we not adjust the MLB start time? It was supposed to be 4:38 until the Yankees won last night. Why not keep it the same? Ohioans….and the bars….are going to be split on what games they show now. Can you make the argument that the ratings of both would be higher if they weren't in the same time slot? I don't know…I'm spiraling…but I hate this. One thing I do know is that this will either be the best night in Ohio history….or the worst night in Ohio history. Or the most average night in Ohio history? No, that's not true. If both of these teams win, it'll be fucking awesome. But if either one loses, it'll fucking suck. 1-1 will feel like 0-2. And Ohio might burn down either way….
**Please also note that the 1-4 Browns play on Sunday against the Eagles. If I know my Ohio sports, the Guardians advance, the Buckeyes win big, and then the Browns get blown out and sportstalk radio leads off on Monday morning debating if we need to make a quarterback change.
