Last Night Was The Breaking Point Of The Terrible ESPN In-Game Interviews, As They Interviewed Garrett Mitchell From The Dugout In the 9th Inning During Postseason Baseball
It's pretty hard to fuck up a postseason broadcast if you think about it. Simply show the game and tell me what's going on. I can even get by with shitty commentating in exchange for being able to hear the crowd and witnessing the big moments. If I'm watching at a bar I just want to....watch. Afterwards I'll nitpick about Bob Costas or whoever not being excited enough, but I'll live. What ESPN is doing during these wild card games is criminal.
So last night Garrett Mitchell hits the go ahead two run bomb in the 8th inning to give the Brewers the late lead in Game 2 vs. the Mets. A vintage October moment no doubt with the crowd going crazy. That means the Mets had 3 outs to go if they were going to extend the game. The top of the 9th obviously became a crucial, nail-biting, nervous moment for both teams with the Brewers trying to stave off elimination and the Mets attempting to conjure up some magic like they did against the Braves on Monday. ESPN's producers decided in that top of the 9th inning that it'd be appropriate to cut away from the game and do an in-game interview with Mitchell from the dugout. They actually missed an at bat in the 9th inning of a two run postseason game! I thought I was imagining things.
As you can imagine, Frank lost it.
Now sometimes Frank gets a little over the top with his complaints. Buster Olney grins randomly at the wind and he takes it as a terroristic threat towards the Mets organization. The broadcaster's inflection in his voice is not up to par with Frank's liking and he calls the Coast Guard. But this? If that was a Yankee postseason game I would have lost my fucking mind. Who is making these decisions? You're missing an at bat at the end of a do or die game to ask Garrett Mitchell what it feels like to hit that home run? What pitch were you looking for? What did you do to prepare? The most generic, waste of an interview you could come up with. Something that easily could be done after the game and not in a rushed manner. Asinine in every way. Find me ONE alive human being (who doesn't work for ESPN) sitting at home begging for the reporter to find a player and talk to him during that 9th inning. You would fail that mission. NO ONE is asking for this. A regular season game where you're trying to keep the audience "entertained?" Fine go nuts, try whatever you want. A postseason game is outrageous.
I'm kinda just over anything during a game that isn't the two or sometimes three broadcasters talking about the game. Jason Kelce was in the MNF football booth a couple weeks ago for an Eagles games and it was terrible. We get it dude, you were a center. You were part of the tush push. I don't need to hear about it incessantly for an entire quarter of the game. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman aren't enough for the booth? We really need to add someone else there? What good does that do? You think people want that? I don't get it. Just call the fucking game and don't annoy me. Is it really that hard to not do too much? Stop making the game secondary.
P.S. ESPN's postseason coverage has been so bad beyond the in-game interviews. I don't know why they've been so late to show where balls are being hit or refusing to show who is up in the bullpen. It's almost like they don't care even though they're showing us all 4 playoff games each day during the WC round. Again, I just don't get it.
