Diamondbacks Owner Ken Kendrick Woke Up Today And Admitted It Was a Horrible Decision To Have Invested Money In Jordan Montgomery - Ignores The Fact That He's Still On The Team And Owed $22.5M Next Season

It was not a fun year for Jordan Montgomery and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Yesterday the team had to sit back and watch their season die as the Mets and Braves split their doubleheader and moved onto the postseason. The only way Arizona would have advanced is if one of those teams were swept on Monday. Just like the Texas Rangers, the Diamondbacks miss the playoffs despite being in the World Series last year. First time both teams have had that happen since 2007.

Jordan Montgomery came over from the Rangers this offseason and was seen as a strong addition to the Snakes' rotation. Unfortunately, it was a disaster from the jump. Monty didn't sign with Arizona until March 29th. He missed all of spring so he began the year in Triple-A Reno to build himself up. He made 13 starts in the first half of the year before ending up on the IL with a knee injury. In that span he compiled a dismal 6.44 ERA. Once he returned from the IL the results didn't get better. After his August 21st start, he was moved to the bullpen for the remainder of the season. Full blown nightmare. Montgomery fired his agent Scott Boras mid-season and said he butchered his free agency, leading to his disaster 2024 campaign.

Well, DBacks owner Ken Kendrick woke up today with his team eliminated from playoff contention, and decided to choose violence towards Montgomery.

That's what we call not beating around the bush.

"Looking back, in hindsight, a horrible decision to have invested that money in a guy that performed as poorly as he did. It was our biggest mistake this season from a talent standpoint. And I'm the perpetrator of that."

Sounds like an old school George Steinbrenner quote. Those were the good ol' days. Just not giving a single fuck and calling everyone out who deserves blame.

Admirable to take responsibility, nice to show he cares about winning, but not exactly enticing for incoming free agents.

Also not sure Kendrick knows that Montgomery is STILL ON THE TEAM! Totally ignoring the fact that Monty had a vesting option for 2025 that triggered when he made 18 starts this season. He's set to earn $22.5M from Arizona next season all while their owner says he was a giant mistake of a signing. Is he wrong? No, but that's crazy to say about a guy who is very much on the team next year. I'm not sure if Montgomery has the ability to opt out of that one year deal, but if there's any question he should announce today he's sticking around out of spite. Good luck trading him for any kind of value after saying he was the worst signing they made last offseason.
