It Turns Out Matthew Sluka's Backup Is WAY Better Than Him and UNLV May Be in a Better Spot With Sluka Gone
When Matthew Sluka announced he was leaving UNLV earlier this week, it obviously seemed like the Rebels were in a bit of a tough spot having to get Hajj-Malik Williams ready to play on short notice while taking on a tough Fresno State team. It turns out Williams is way better than Sluka and probably should have been playing this whole time.
Both Sluka and Williams transferred to UNLV this past offseason and battled for the starting job. Sluka was fine in his three starts this season and is a dynamic runner, but he finished his short season completing just 43.8 percent of his passes for 318 yards. Williams started today 11-14 for 158 yards and two touchdowns in just over a half. It looks like the Rebels are going to be just fine.
If Sluka really did get fucked out of an NIL deal he was promised, that really sucks and I don't blame him for leaving. But it has to sting a little more to walk out the door and see your team doing even better without you. I don't know how many programs out there are lining up for a 48 percent passer who was seemingly holding a Group of Five offense back. Stay strong, brother.
