A Japanese Man Trying To "Double His Life" Has Cut His Sleep To 30 Minutes Per Day For The Last 12 Years
Look I know I've been known to pat myself on the back from time to time about my work ethic. And while that play wore thin after about two days at this company, I will release my number one secret to success and that is to get your ass up out of bed and get to work. Not to be cliche but like I told my former students and basketball players: everyone has the same 24 hours in the day. How do YOU choose to use yours?
You'll see some version of this poster up in 90% of lorckerrooms across the Midwest:
And it's true, for the most part. The way I see it, a grown adult needs about 7 hours of sleep per night to function. If you want to stay up til midnight, sleep in til 7 and then get up and moving. If you want to go to bed early around 10, get up by 5 and get moving. I think that puts you ahead of 99.9% of people if you simply set an alarm, wake up early, and start while they sleep. But that .1% of people you can't beat by doing this? This fucking guy.
Am I reading this correctly? He sleeps 30 minutes per day. And it's not like he does this for a day, or even for a week. Or even for a month. Or even for a year. This motherfucker has cut his sleep to 30 minutes per day for the last TWELVE YEARS. He's an entrepreneur from Japan that wants to "double his life", so he has cut out the part where he lays his head down to rest and replaced it with being awake and doing things.
"As long as you exercise or drink coffee an hour before eating, you can stave off drowsiness."
I might need to try this. I'm calling bullshit on the fact that he's actually done this for 12 years, as well as the fact that it's possible to "stave off drowsiness". But if he gets to live two lives, I'm interested to see if it works. But listen, I don't want to be a stickler here but if the average person sleeps for 8 hours a day, staying awake for the other 16, and this guys stays up for the full 24…..he's only adding another 33% on the average bear. Don't get me wrong, he's a pyscho and I couldn't do what he does, but that's not double. Just my two cents.
My other two cents is do you really want to be awake all the fucking time? This world kinda sucks. What do you do from 1 am to 5 am when the rest of the planet is dead? Guy says his passions are "painting, music, and mechanical design", which is cool and all, but like, 16 hours a day is plenty to enjoy those things. Maybe try sleeping for 3-4 hours a night and see what you're missing before going full cold-turkey on the 30 minutes? But to each his own, I guess.
