Main Character Syndrome: Shohei Ohtani Blasts a Walk Off Grand Slam While Becoming The 6th Player Ever To Join The 40/40 Club

When it comes to big prospects or incoming new superstars we're so quick to throw every expectation in the book on these athletes and almost dare them to fall short. There's a sadistic part of us that wants them to fail so we can jump all over them and scream "BUST" from the mountain tops. Just because you're a "can't miss" college player or a number one draft pick, doesn't mean you're a lock to live up to the hype. We see hopeful phenoms fall off a cliff at the pro level all the time. Mark Appel, Jesus Montero, and Bubba Starling come to mind with baseball. Expanding to other sports, guys like JaMarcus Russell and Michael Beasley come to mind.
On the flip side, people like LeBron James, Sidney Crosby, and Bryce Harper thrived under the hype. Well, you can add Shohei Ohtani to that list.
Way to be a subtle about it man. Man character syndrome much? Way to share the spotlight, sheesh.
Shohei had to come over to a new country with everyone expecting a God-like repertoire to be shown off. A two way behemoth who does shit you've never seen before. And that's pretty much exactly what we've gotten. He's been exactly as advertised, a generational "tell your kids about" player. There's pretty much nothing you could have said going into his MLB career that would be unattainable. Hell, he even beat the gambling allegations and overcame the whole Ippei mess of a story to start the season. The only thing that's stopped him is his UCL, but when he's on the mound he's pitched to the tune of a career 3.01 ERA. He's now amassed three 40 homer years, and is well on his way to a 3rd MVP. Oh and he's really fast on top of that. It's fucking ridiculous what he's capable of doing. Guy just became the 6th player ever to go 40/40 and he did it on a walk off grand slam. And by the way, it's only August 24th. He's got a great shot at being the first ever 50/50 guy.
In a year where offense is down across the league you've got Ohtani doing this shit while Judge is back on pace for another 60 homer season. I'm happy they're in separate leagues now so there's no arguing with guys like Ben Verlander about who the MVP is. It's exhausting to fight with people about who is better, so now that I don't have to I can appreciate them both.
P.S. This was elite villain shit by Siri. Definitely didn't know the significance of the homer, but pretending that he was fully aware makes it funnier.
P.P.S. TOUGH being this guy who brought a glove to the game, was camped up the ball for what seemed like a destiny moment for him, only to get slightly bumped by the guy next to him and drop the ball. I'm not going home after that.
