The Reverse Rick Ankiel: Introducing Future Yankees Closer And Former Rays World Series Hero (Outfielder) Brett Phillips
If this was a movie and the clip above was playing, you'd probably hear Brett Philips talking to the audience saying, "You're probably wondering how I got here." Just four years ago this man delivered the walk-off hit to one of the craziest World Series games ever played.
To this day, that's still his lone postseason hit of his career. Since that moment, Phillips bounced around a bit, even playing some ball down in the minors. Eventually the 30 year old had the wherewithal to abandon being a position player and try his hand out at pitching in an attempt to revive his career.
There had been no indication in the past that Phillips could be a pitcher. His notable highlight from being on the mound came from this insane web gem while on the Rays.
Amazing play, but notice him throwing in 40s. Well, earlier this year he popped up in semi-pro ball throwing 97 mph with a filthy breaking ball. The announcers weren't even sure if it was the real Brett Phillips.
Well fast forward to now with Phillips signed to a minor league deal with the Yankees, trying to make it back to the big leagues as a pitcher. The reverse Rick Ankiel if you will.
If there's one thing he's crushed so far, it's the look. Stache with the hair going out the back out of the hat. I'd throw this man in the Yankees bullpen without a second's hesitation. I might trust him over any of these bums if we're being honest.
The fate of the universe on the line, the Martians have the death beam pointed at earth, I want BRETT PHILLIPS getting that final out.
Not but seriously, if Phillips gets back to the big leagues as a reliever that'd be so fucking cool. Throwing 97 with a fall off the table breaking ball will get you somewhere. Hell, on his no-throw days you can use him as a defensive sub/pinch runner. There's legit value here if he can be competent on the mound. I'm rooting for the guy. What a story this would be.
