Draymond Green Says That The 2024 USA Team Would Beat The Dream Team 5 Out Of 7 Games
First of all my question for Draymond is why would they play a 7th game if the current team wins 4 of the first 6? But as for the actual argument at hand, I would be remiss if I didn't take the low-hanging fruit and quote the great Larry Bird on this one. "They probably could beat the Dream Team. I have touched a ball in 30 years and we're all old."
Now I must admit that I've flip-flopped multiple times while getting ready to attack this blog, unsure of what side I'd actually be on. Coming into this Olympics, I was of the belief that today's athletes are bigger, faster, stronger, and more skilled than the greats of age past. It's not like this 1992 was featuring Bob Cousy....
…..but they also weren't featuring the versatility of athletes we have today. Obviously the pros of the Dream Team are clear: all but one of the 12 players are in the Hall of Fame. They went 8-0 in the Olympics. And they won by an average of 44 points per game. But the rest of the world was light years behind us, which is why we were able to take some of these players that were past their prime and wipe the floor with everyone. But don't get me wrong, the 2024 also has players over the hump.
Our clear best player and leader has been 39 year old LeBron James. So honestly, I don't love the argument in general, rather I wish it were teams with players in their prime. Ultimately, I'd say it'd be very close. I think 2024 has the overall talent advantage, but I also think, whether I'm right or wrong, that today's generation gives up their advantage in versatility and size and skill by lacking some mental toughness. Maybe it's not fair, but it's how I feel.
I'd take…..2024 in ONE GAME, Dream Team if you're playing a 7 game series. The longer it goes on, the more than toughness, mental toughness, coaching, and intangibles come into play.
