Steve Kerr Is Benching And Then Starting Team USA Players Like A Middle School Basketball Coach Would After Having An Angry Parent Meeting
Look I'm not saying Steve Kerr has an easy job. In fact, I think it's actually an extremely difficult job to lead a team that is such a heavy favorite to win the Gold Medal that anything else would be a complete and utter failure. Plus he's got to manage 12 NBA stars and their egos. I'm sure if Steve Kerr was handling this a completely different way, me and other critics would be poking holes in his plan as well. But with all of that being said, I do think it's kinda middle schoolish with the way he's benching Jayson Tatum and then starting him / running the first play for him. Then benching Joel Embiid and already announcing that he's starting against Puerto Rico. It just reminds me of a middle school coach that doesn't give a kid much time, then meets with his angry parents, then plays him too much the next game, then meets with the other kids angry parents.
Now don't get me wrong: if he truly is playing the guys he thinks gives them the best matchup and chance to win against a specific team, then fine. But does he really mean it? Would he bench Steph Curry if he went, say, 1 for 9 and got torched on defense? Or is he only okay with doing it when it's Tatum, Hailburton, and Embiid? I sort of feel like an old man yelling at a cloud right now, but what do you want me to say? Team USA is going to walk away with this Gold Medal, but the drama surrounding the team and the coaching and the minutes played has certainly kept me intrigued in all of this.
