Is This The Worst Summer For Movies EVER? Reviews For 'The Bikeriders', 'Maxxxine' and 'A Quiet Place: Day One'
You can blame it on the writers strike or whatever else, but this summer has been BAD for movies. These three movies are no exception.
We give a lot more expanded thoughts on each but here is a quick punch for the three.
- The Bikeriders: This movie is definitely the best of the three. Jodie Comer is really good as is the production value and a few of the scenes. However, this movie is derailed for me by a really dumpy Tom Hardy accent and by the fact that Austin Butler was basically just along for the ride. It just gave the movie a sort of listless feel that makes it more of a vibes flic than anything else.
- Maxxxine: As a huge fan of both 'X' and 'Pearl', I was really pumped for this one. While the first two were filmed as a "surprise" back-to-back (they only decided to make the sequel mid-filming) on a low budget, this one had an expanded budget and a HUGE cast. However, this is the ultimate "they bit off more than they could chew" movie.
- A Quiet Place: Day One: I saw an interview earlier with Fede Alvarez (director of 'Alien: Romulus) and Ridley Scott where he mentioned that making the Alien movies got harder as it went on because audiences got less scared of the Xenomorph. I think the same holds true here. The mysticism of the creatures is gonna and not nearly as interesting as the first movie.
