Greg Sankey Declines To Comment At This Time If "Horns Down" Will Result In A Penalty In The SEC
I fucking love College Football. I'm not even sure that Greg Sankey has the authority to determine what constitutes a penalty in the SEC, but declining to comment on 'Horns Down' on July 1st has given us a storyline to look forward to. Will he address it again at SEC Media Days? Who will make the final call? Are there discussions being had? Is Texas trying to accompany the hand gesture with a 15 yard penalty and potential ejection? Are we going to review Horns Down like we would targeting to see intent? And if intent to harm is found, do they miss the 1st half of the next game too?
So many questions, and it's so fucking funny that this is a serious topic. I need 'Horns Down' to be a penalty so teams start going 'Horns Sideways' and then we have to hire a Mathematician in the review booth to determine the angle of the gesture. I want this to become the biggest thing possible.
And here's the thing: the more and more this gets discussed, the more of a guarantee it is that everyone and the sister they married will be out in full force when Texas comes to town with the Horns Down in the holster. And Texas fans can say all they want that they don't even care, it's tough to beat the allegations when we saw Rodney Terry confront UCF players that did it when they beat Texas.
How soft can one team / fanbase be? The fact of the matter is that if Horns Up is going to be allowed, then Horns Down needs to be allowed. If you really want to whine and moan about it, then the only option is to get rid of horns in general. In fact, let's make cattle extinct. Too polarizing of an animal. Feelings getting hurt because of them.
But in all seriousness, am I wrong that you can do Horns Down as long as you're not taunting opponents? Seems like this would be fine....
….but doing it to the opposing Defensive Back would be a penalty. Wouldn't it be the same for the Florida Gator Chomp? I don't think making that motion gives you an auto-penalty, but taunting does. The Big 12 officials coordinator started this entire fiasco in 2021 by saying "If you do a Horns Down to a Texas player as an opponent, that's probably going to be a foul," and now the world has ran with it. But I don't care if it's spiraled out of control, I love the drama.
Maybe we should just get rid of the taunting rule in general and let the boys be boys on Saturdays?
