In a Shocking Turn Of Events, Modell’s Might Be Coming Back

Well well well … what a pleasant surprise on a Tuesday. Legendary retail sporting good store Modell’s is back… maybe … possibly … we’re not really sure. For those of you unfamiliar and not from the East Coast, take a refresher via Clem’s tribute to them :

For those from the area you remember this place for a variety of things. Clem brings up such a good point that this place had the hats and shirts when your team won the division or league or Super Bowl faster than anyone. I will never forget that I got a League champs sweatshirt and World Series patch hat from MO’s in 2000. Legendary.

I will remember it for three standout things

A- the jingle

Just an all timer of a jingle. “GOTTA GO TO MO’S.” I’m horrible at name that tune but I think I would get this one in literally one note the amount of times I’ve heard it in ads and on radio etc. legendary jingle .

2- sidewalk sales

I don’t think Modell’s invented sidewalk sales but holy shit did they do them right. Felt like every week from spring to summer they had racks of shit literally on the sidewalk for sale. Every year before sleepsway basketball camp my dad would take me and my brothers to go pick up a pair of sneakers we would beat the shit out of for an entire week playing on the blacktop and in the gym up at camp. He even told us if they get holes in them just leave them there under the bed. I’m not saying you got the top of the line brand new Jordan’s for $25, but you could find gems on these racks.

D- it felt like the working man’s sporting goods store

I always felt like if you wanted brand new in game sneakers you were going to finish line. Or if you needed a new glove you were at Sports Authority or ordering on Eastbay etc. But on a Saturday when you did errands with your dad or little league practice was starting up, Modell’s it was. Nobody was too good to shop at Modell’s and stock up reasonably priced stuff for their families. And you ALWAYS. I mean always ran into someone you knew doing the same. It was a truly for the people.

If it comes back I hope all three of these things return because that’s the Modell’s I know and love.
