Embrace Debate: Kevin Harlan's "GOOOOOOD" vs Mike Breen's "BANG!", Who Ya Got?

While watching the Lakers/Pelicans game last night, you couldn't help but get caught up in the moment listening to Kevin Harlan call the game. One of the GOATs for sure, there's nothing like getting a Harlan game regardless of the sport, especially basketball. A great voice, a perfect understanding of the moment, and some of the most legendary calls you'll ever hear.

So during all the chaos of that game, after hearing Harlan's patented "GOOOOD" call, I had this thought

I feel like most people would agree with that statement. When you hear that call and it's in your favor, you feel on top of the world. I would argue if it comes in a big game, there's no better feeling on earth. Sure sex is cool, but have you ever experienced the Mike Breen double "BANG" in a win or go home Game 7??

Then my brain took things a step further and started thinking about which call was better.

As someone who doesn't consider myself a "Harlan guy" or a "Breen guy", I'm a Mike Gorman "GOT IT!!!" guy, so I feel like I can be objective here.

For years, it felt like Mike Breen's "BANG!!" owned this debate. It's something that always plays whenever you hear it, but in a playoff setting? It's hard to get much better. It's about as iconic as you can get when talking about play by play calls, and I can't think of a time it didn't ever deliver in the moment.

But is it crazy to suggest Kevin Harlan's "GOOOOD" has found a way to enter the discussion? Is it possible that it rivals Mike Breen's "BANG"? Is that a hot take? Let's go to the tape

vs

As you can see, both are incredible. That's what makes this debate so tough.

When I hear the Harlan call, I think what stands out to me is it feels like he's saying it from the bottom of his soul. I'm not even sure if that makes sense or if I'm describing that correctly, but it feels like it comes from somewhere down deep within Harlan. Maybe it's a play by play trick and he's doing something with his voice, but there's substance there.

With Breen's call, it's more based in excitement. While both can devastating to hear in their own way, the Harlan one is like a kick to the stomach whereas the Breen one is like getting stabbed in your heart. Again, I'm not sure if this is even making sense to anyone, but to me, it makes perfect sense.

I just don't think it's crazy to suggest that at the very least, Harlan's "GOOOD" should be elevated into the same tier as Breen's famous "BANG!", if not higher. Is maturing realizing that Kevin Harlan is maybe the best national play by play guy we have? My whole life, especially with national NBA games, it's always been Breen. But now I'm not so sure, I think I actually enjoy Harlan's calls/games more? There's no wrong answer here as both guys are legends and legitimate broadcasting icons, but it does feel like there's been a shift.

So what say you? Is this a crazy hot take? Am I weird for even thinking about this debate in my head last night (I know this answer already)?

Breen vs Harlan, who ya got?
