X-Men '97 Isn't Just An Awesome Comic Book Cartoon, It's Already One Of The Best TV Shows Marvel Has Ever Made

Previously on X-Men blogs...

I swear to God, I had no intention on writing another blog about how good X-Men '97 was despite Marvel's favorite mutants being the reason I got into comics and to be honest, all the other nerdy shit I grew up loving. But GOOD LORD episode 5 was a ride I did not see coming.

If you haven't watched it and don't want it spoiled, kindly close this blog now then return once you do. As always, thank you for the #click.

Also for people looking to catch up on all the X-Mayhem that went down in the original show, Screen Crush did an outstanding job packing it all into one quick video.

Alright, we ready to talk episode 5 and cry on each others shoulders? Good!

- First of all, let me say RIP my dog REMEY LEBEAU. Gambit was easily one of the fan favorites of the original X-Men cartoon in the 90s, which is why killing him off halfway through Season 1 of the reboot or whatever you wanna call X-Men '97 was such a shock. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy I don't have to watch my favorite Cajun get cucked verbally and physically by big bad Magneto every week. But I didn't want death to be the reason that stopped happening on screen.

On the bright side, Gambit having a legendary heroic moment while constantly spewing gambling puns was probably how he always wanted to go out.

Meanwhile, I imagine Professor X would be horrified to find out a giant statue of him crushed a bunch of mutants thanks to humans claiming peace before betraying their trust.

That my friends is what we call in the journalism biz a metaphor. I think. I am not a journalist and didn't go to journalism school. But it sounded like a cool way to explain the depth that this show has, literally starting from the opening credits.

Along with the little breadcrumb that shit was about to go down as The Watcher did what his name says he does in the sky.

I always loved the X-Men animated series, but figured part of that was thanks to all the dopamine the nostalgia of the 90s pumps into my brain. However, after watching the first five episodes of X-Men '97, it's pretty clear that this is maybe the best TV show in MCU history. That's not just me, a diehard X-Men fan saying that. That's what the notoriously negative internet is saying!

Sure being one of the best MCU shows is like being one of the best athletes at Barstool. But Loki was awesome, Hawkeye had its moments, and WandaVision was a blast even if we created a better show connecting dots that didn't exist to lead us to Mephisto (I can't speak on all the other Marvel shows like Daredevil, The Punisher, or Legion since I haven't seen them yet).

X-Men '97 isn't perfect and damn near isn't for kids like I remember it being back in the 90s considering this line ruined my day just like it did in WandaVision.

Note to self: Do NOT start or end your day by watching the 25 minute cartoon you loved as a child.

As fucked up as that mutant massacre was, I cannot WAIT to see the chaos Magneto unleashes. Something tells me isn't going to be happy once emerges from the rubble (No Body = No Death, old comic book rule).

If the Magnet Man gets too out of control, which I fully expect since him speaking German is usually a precursor to some baddddd shit, it's nice to know we have another hero outside of the X-Men ready to land a hand.

I'm not sure how effective Cap's shield is against the master of magnetism, but I can't wait to find out!

Also I have to drop the obligatory soundbite at Cyclops for attempting to cheat on Jean Grey telepathically despite her being the most powerful telepath on the planet.

It was a tough episode for ol' One Eye considering his girl caught him in the act, he smooched Wolverine, and looked like an anti-human bigot on TV. But he's still somehow in better shape than he was in the old X-Men movies where this was metaphorically happening to him every other scene.

Again, not sure if I used metaphor right there. But I'm sticking with it!
