The Cold War Kids Talk Their Incredible 20 Year Career

The Cold War Kids aren't your average, run-of-the-mill indie band. Imagine a group of dudes from Long Beach, California, who thought, "Hey, let's mix some rock, a bit of soul, and just a dash of blues to cook up something epic." That's them. With Nathan Willett's vocals that can probably make a statue weep and a sound that's as unpredictable as it is familiar.

So, how did this whole shindig start? Picture this: The year is 2004. The scene is a bunch of friends jamming in a converted restaurant turned band practice garage turned recording studio, creating sounds that were too good to stay within those four walls. Nathan Willett (vocals, piano), Matt Maust (bass guitar), Jonnie Russell (guitar), and Matt Aveiro (drums). 

Their first big hit, "Hang Me Up to Dry," (above) basically put them on the map faster than you can say "free drinks." Their debut album, Robbers & Cowards, wasn't just a collection of tracks; it was more like a declaration of arrival. (nerds at Pitchforks words, not mine)

Let's talk big leagues. Albums like Loyalty to Loyalty and Mine Is Yours had fans and critics alike nodding in approval. But when Hold My Home dropped with the banger "First"? That was their mic drop moment, hitting the top of the charts and probably blasting from every college dorm room across the nation.

Festival-goers know the score too. If you've been to Coachella, Lollapalooza, or Bonnaroo, there's a high probability you've caught a Cold War Kids set.

The Cold War Kids have continued to create and perform music. They released their latest album, the self titled, Cold War Kids, a project that showcases their range from rock anthems to introspective ballads, to massive critical acclaim.

Their single "Run Away With Me" is a certified boner inducer.

The band has been actively touring, engaging with fans old and new across the globe. We were so lucky to catch up with them on their Philadelphia tour stop at The Fillmore Theatre last weekend. 

Lead singer Nate sat down with us and gave us a great interview- discussing how the band has managed to not only endure over 20 years, but stay relevant through the ever changing musical landscape while staying true to their sound, and who they are as a band.
