Destiny - America Is Going To Fall In Love With Samford's Bucky McMillan, Who Created His Own 'BuckyBall' System And Was Hired Straight From High School
I debated whether or not to blog this, but then I remembered that there are idiots out there who only complain about college basketball. How we don't have stars or how people aren't watching because Jim Boeheim retired and coaches get old. Well, here comes Bucky McMillan who is a lock to be America's darling. I guess I should specify, he's going to be the lock for coaching darling, because people will fall in love with players throughout the Tournament. It happens every year.
Shit, we already have a real-life example of America falling in love with a high school coach. Not sure if Bucky can blog, but if he can, he will win over anyone and everyone. Maybe he should take a couple shots at other coaches in the SoCon and he'll be driving in the middle of the night to shoot free throws with his pals and new, fancier job. I don't know if Tate came out with his own system while dominating Columbus high school hoops, but we know Bucky did.
That's right, Bucky McMillan is the inventor of BuckyBall. If you're not a diehard college basketball fan you likely haven't heard that term. But in the 4 years he's been at Samford, he's used this system and it's been one of the biggest turnarounds in mid-major hoops in the country. Samford was trash before he got there, that's just a factual statement. Basically BuckyBall is press the everliving shit out of a team no matter what. They miss a shot, they get in your ass on the rebound and press you. The offense is analytics and basically threes and layups. It's not some crazy theory since we see a lot of teams play this way on offense, but you look and they are an elite shooting team (top-10 in the country from 3) and one of the fastest teams in the country.
America is going to fall in love with this guy. That's before you remember they started the season with this decision:
Give us the rematch! I don't care about NCAA Tournament seed rules and not having rematches. I want to see Dallas Graziani go up against Zach Edey again. I don't even care that Samford is going to be like a 13 seed. We saw what FDU did to Purdue last year, Samford could do that!
But this is about destiny - his words
He was hired as a head coach with zero college experience. He turned Mountain Brook high school in Alabama into a national power. Do you know how rare something like that is? You gotta go back to the days of John Thompson for another example of it working out. Sure, Samford isn't Georgetown but Bucky is 40 years old and going to be on a bunch of lists for openings when it comes time.
Like I said, it happens every NCAA Tournament. Ron Hunter falling out of a chair. Andy Enfield coaching dunk city and having a model wife. Hampton's coach going crazy after beating Iowa State back in the day. These mid-major coaches take over America and Bucky is going to be that guy.
