Charlie Woods Will Try To Qualify For His First PGA Tour Event This Week

And so it begins. Charlie Woods, who turned 15 just a few weeks ago, will try to qualify for his first PGA Tour event this week. He'll tee it up in the pre-qualifier for the Monday qualifier for the Cognizant Classic, the tournament formerly known at the Honda Classic that's played near the Woods' home in South Florida.

He'll play at Lost Lake Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Fla. at 7:39 a.m. EST and need to finish in roughly the top 25 to qualify for the Monday qualifier, which will offer just four spots in the Cognizant Classic. It's unlikely he'll make it through both qualifiers but this is significant in that its the most telltale sign that the younger Woods hopes to follow in his father's footsteps and become a professional golfer.

Charlie Woods is an impressive young player—we've seen that the last few years at the PNC Challenge, where he's impressed with his game and with how similar his mannerisms are to his old man. But he is not, at least not yet, the same caliber of junior that Tiger was. Charlie has shot under par in competition multiple times but also has struggled at times, shooting 78-76 to finish 26th in the Florida high school state championship. (His team, the Benjamin School, won the championship. Charlie's score was fourth-best on his team). This will be his first time teeing it up against aspiring professionals.

It'll be interesting to see whether Charlie wears his dad's new Sun Day Red line in collaboration with TaylorMade. He wore Nike to match with his dad in every PNC appearance up until last year, when he turned up wearing Greyson. A post welcoming Charlie to the "Greyson family" was posted and then deleted off social media shortly thereafter.

Pre-qualifiers are not televised—remember that too-large portions of literal PGA Tour events aren't televised, so we've gotta walk before we run here—but there will hopefully be coverage of some kind come Thursday morning. Tiger's caddied for his son in tournaments in the past and, given he's not playing in this week's Mexico Open at Vidanta, it's not impossible he'll loop on Thursday…assuming, that is, that he's recovered from the flu which took him out of the Genesis Invitational last week after just 25 holes.
