This Parents Brawl at a New Jersey High School Wrestling Tourney is the Perfect Jersey Moment

Following the conclusion of a separate match across the gym, the two men — one wearing a white T-shirt and hat, the other in a black hoodie and hat — are captured shouting back and forth on the outskirts of the wrestling mat.

Those words led to the men quickly getting into each other’s faces before the man in white viscously shoves the other away.

Whatever Phillipsburg underclassman who signed up for the AV Club with hopes of becoming the next Tarantino or Mr. Beast has a lot to learn about framing a scene and capturing the action that truly tells the story in a relevant way. At best, this is nothing more than an homage to Hitchcock's propensity for keeping the main narrative center frame while allowing some plot detail to take place on the edge of the frame. But it's self indulgent to focus on a banal story about two wrestlers no one cares about when a bunch of geographical stereotypes are going ham on each other in the background. Do better, kid. And remember this when you're going into six figure debt to get your degree from NYU film school.

Anyway, let's hear it for the citizen journalist who went into the fray to capture the images we deserve to see:

Once in a while, you witness a scene that just perfectly encapsulates the culture of a region. Where, without any other information but what you see on the screen, you know exactly where it was filmed. Someone in a beret riding a bike with a baguette protruding from the basket past a mime under the Eiffel Tower. A gentleman in a tweed suit and a derby while carrying an umbrella past Big Ben. A a buxom woman in Lederhosen and Tyrolean hat serving preposterously large mugs of beer. 

And this clip captures everything we know and love about the people of Jersey in a mere 43 seconds. The guy in the school colors quarter zip getting in the face of the lady in the hair extensions with the frosted highlights. Flannel Shirt Man acting like he wants in on the action while making zero attempt to resist the thick-necked guys keeping him out of the action. Whoever starts yelling "Tom! Tom!" for no purpose that becomes apparent. The mullets. The mustaches. The hoodies and Carhardt jackets. And best of all, this guy, whose sweatshirt has never even met the button on his 30-inch waisted jeans.

Until now, I'd say that the most iconic depiction of Jersey ever is the opening credits of The Sopranos. Others might argue any part of The Jersey Shore. But my runner up would be the episode of It's Always Sunny when the gang goes to the beach only to find it closed because of a toxic spill and homeless guys buggering each under the boardwalk. On a personal note, my buddies Kenny and Cliffy and I still talk about the time we were in Atlantic City on our way to a Patriots at Jets game, and there was a quadruple amputee woman laying on a gurney playing a Casio keyboard with her tongue. (Note we found out recently she died. Requiescat in pace, sweet angel. You had no arms or legs, but now you have wings.) To me these have always been the images I associate with the great people of The Garden State. 

Until now. Never change, parents of Phillipsburg High School wrestlers. The rest of us just need you to keep being your true authentic selves.
