CM Punk's WrestleMania Main Event Dreams Have Been Crushed Once Again

When CM Punk walked out on the WWE over ten years ago, one of his main gripes was never getting to main event a WrestleMania despite being one of the most talented/over members of the roster for years. He spoke about it on the now infamous tell-all podcast he did with then-friend Colt Cabana, and about how much he tried to steal the show over John Cena/The Rock in his final two Mania appearances....so when Punk made his shocking return to the WWE at Survivor Series in November, it seemed obvious that a WrestleMania main event was on the horizon for him. The timing was perfect.

WrestleMania is a two-night extravaganza now, if you weren't aware, and the assumption was the Seth Rollins vs CM Punk would headline Night 1, while Roman Reigns vs Cody Rhodes (or The Rock) would headline Night 2.

Unfortunately, though, his WrestleMania main event dreams have been crushed yet again after Punk sustained a torn tricep taking a Future Shock DDT from Drew McIntyre in the Royal Rumble on Saturday - his first televised match back in the company....

This is sadly the third major injury Punk has sustained since returning to wrestling, and the second torn triceps since 'Brawl Out', so I've seen many quick to label him "injury-prone" - but I'm not even thinking about that right now. I'm just bummed. I'm bummed for Punk, I'm bummed for Rollins - who truly got the snip/snap treatment this year….

….and I'm bummed for everyone who bought tickets to WrestleMania hoping to see that match. It really was the perfect Night 1 main event on paper.

Now you've gotta wonder who will step up and take Punk's place in that match. I feel like Intercontinental Champion Gunther or LA Knight are the best options, but I could also see Drew McIntyre or a dark horse like Senor MITB Damien Priest getting in there.

Who do YOU think faces Seth Rollins in the Night 1 main event?

P.S. Here's Punk's full promo from last night, which is really great and worth a watch if you've got 11 minutes….

Get well soon Punk.
