Dan Campbell Went At It With A Detroit Sports Radio Host Over His Decision To Go For 2 Against The Cowboys

This most recent football weekend may have been the most memorable that the state of Michigan has seen in a long time. You had Michigan defeating Alabama in the Rose Bowl and advancing to the national championship. That represented the highest of highs. On the other end of the spectrum, you had the Lions, who, once again, got hosed by the officials in Dallas, costing them a game and potentially a shot at the two seed in the NFC. I’m not going to recap all of what happened. It’s been well documented, and I give Dan Campbell and Company credit for not backing down from what they saw. This wasn't a 5-11 Lions team getting screwed in a meaningless game. This play affected the outlook of the NFC playoffs.

Campbell has been making the rounds with the media this week as the Lions prepare for their final game of the season against the Vikings. He made an appearance on 97.1, Detroit's main sports radio station, and got into a bit of a back-and-forth with host Jim Costa over his decision to go for two against the Cowboys. Remember, the Lions ran three plays after deciding to go for two. Two of them were negated because of penalties, but what Costa was mainly focused on was Campbell's choice to go for two after the first penalty when the Lions were at the 7-yard line.

A lot of people are taking Dan Campbell's side here. I'm not surprised by that. The guy has an insanely high approval rating in Michigan right now. But this is one of those instances where I have to give credit to both sides. Campbell is pissed about the way that the game ended against the Cowboys. I don't blame him for that. Detroit played well enough to win, and they got hosed by the officiating. On the other hand, Jim Costa does a great job on the radio. He's one of the best voices that Detroit has right now. He's not afraid to express his opinion and didn't back down from his opinion in this case. Going for two from the 7-yard line from a percentage standpoint is insane. Detroit lucked out because Dallas jumped offsides, but it's why I just chalk this segment up to being good radio. Both guys are technically correct. Campbell stayed true to his identity, and Costa pointed out the facts. It was a low-risk play.

One of the best things about this Lions team is that they've had a short memory this year. They have not had back-to-back losses this entire season. I hope that that trend continues. Last week's loss was shitty. There's no way around it. But this is still an NFC North champion that has their goals in front of them. Campbell had to answer all the questions today, but you turn the page starting tomorrow. Beat the Vikings and have some good momentum going into the playoffs.
