It's Time For Owner Tom Gores To Make A Decision: Sell The Detroit Pistons Or Move The Team To Another City

Things are pretty good in Detroit right now as far as sports are concerned. The Detroit Lions seem poised to win the NFC North. The Red Wings might fight for a playoff spot, and even my Tigers seem to be trending in the right direction. Then you have the Detroit Pistons, who are becoming the NBA’s version of Bishop Sycamore High School. They have now lost 23 consecutive games, and there’s a legitimate chance they will go through the rest of 2023 without another win. The numbers are staggering. I’ve written enough blogs about how bad the team is and how poorly constructed the roster is. Troy Weaver has done a lousy job as the GM for this team, but this goes so much deeper than just a GM.

Tom Gores has owned the Detroit Pistons since 2011. The franchise has continually sputtered and spiraled out of control. This is malpractice at a level that would make even the Ford family jealous. It’s time he made a decision: either sell the Detroit Pistons or move them to another city.

There are terrible owners in every sport. I think you probably feel an owner's wrath the most in baseball because there's no salary cap, and they are more often than not in charge of the budget. In general, you have to suck something awful to impact a team in the NFL or the NBA. Tom Gores has done that with the Detroit Pistons. It's time to not up or shut up. Your rebuild has failed, as did the one before, and you are showing absolutely zero ability to be a leader.

The Detroit Pistons were, at one time, a very proud franchise, but there's something about watching them recently that makes me think that perhaps they're turning into the basketball version of the Oakland days, a team with a storied history but a completely directionless future. It's sad to say it, but there are certain franchises who, despite their history and fanfare, just need to die.

The Detroit Pistons have been so bad for so long that even their diehard fans have started to lose interest. This team will likely win another game at some point this season. After that happens, everyone will stop paying attention. This dumpster fire of a basketball team will scratch and claw their way to 15 wins and we'll begin another rebuild for a team that has been in an endless rebuild for about 10 years.

It feels like we're living in an alternate universe. When I was growing up, the Detroit Pistons held themselves to a high standard, while the Detroit Lions were the floundering organization that employed people because they liked them. Those roles have now been reversed. The Lions have turned into a well-oiled machine, while the Pistons have given guys positions simply because they're related to somebody. They might play in a professional league, but this is not a professional organization. This bumbling lunacy has been going on for so long that Pistons fans have started to run out of fucks to give. Either clean house or start from scratch. Sadly, I don't think Tom Gores is interested in doing either.
