The Bears Have Left Me Completely Dumbfounded As This Chris Simms Clip Has Me Actually Optimistic

I don't know which way is up anymore. This entire season feels like a contradiction. A Chinese finger trap of thoughts where no matter how hard you pull in any direction there is pain.

--Eberflus has been a disaster. Two coaches fired for HR reasons. The Offensive Coordinator still not fully understanding how to use his players. The coaching staff has made several decisions that have cost this team wins.

...but...

There's something to be said a team that does seem to be improving as the year goes along. This group, with the controversy at the beginning of the season, the QB injury, and all of the noise around the organization could've completely folded. They haven't and that is a mini miracle in itself. They've already improved over last year's win total with more winnable games coming down the stretch.

--I think it is fairly obvious that Justin Fields isn't going to be an All-Pro/HOF/Franchise quarterback like a Mahomes, Burrow, etc. There's still issues with seeing the field, there's still some accuracy issues, and there's always going to be injury concerns with a QB1 who runs as much as him

...but...

That doesn't mean you can't win with Justin Fields. Give Fields a game plan designed for him and Marvin Harrison Jr and the Bears will have success. Fields won't win the MVP even in that situation, but if you have a guy that protects the football and extends drives with his legs that can go a long way. Drafting a QB high is always a roll of the dice to some degree. What's behind door #2 might be another failed rebuild which keeps the Bears locked in this cycle of suck forever. I think Fields can progress to the point where is like the 10-12th best QB in the league. As long as they pay him accordingly and don't get trapped into the auto-renewal mega extension that teams seem to do for no reason, then the Bears could be in a good spot to build around him.

I've done nothing but talk myself in circles with this team. It's a week to week league, but when you're in the middle of a rebuild all the real questions are long term. They're still unanswered. At this point I am out on Eberflus and kicking the can down the road on Fields. That is subject to change with more information. I think, you could argue, that Chris Simms is right about the Bears. The project, overall, is still on the right path. Roster is clearly better than it was last year with young talent and a ton of cap space and a high draft pick to play with.
