Recruiting 101: Marshall's Head Coach Claims His Quarterback Entered The Transfer Portal Because Fans Hated Him
Oh, yeah, this is how you recruit. Just a little brutal honesty about not having NIL (common theme for coaches) and that little tidbit about Marshall fans hating the quarterback. I mean why wouldn't you go play there now? Not to mention you have Cam Fancher's sister commenting about how it actually happened. But I can't ever recall a coach being like yeah no-brainer to hit the transfer portal, fans couldn't stand the guy. Sick of him. I get that he wasn't great this year. 11 TDs/11 picks. It's fair to criticize players, it's what we do as fans.
Oh and his mother responded calling the coach out:
Hot start!
I get you want your team to win, but you're also Marshall. If you don't have a Pennington, Leftwich or Moss what's your legit ceiling? 6-6 seasons happen. Trust me, they happen a lot. At some point you gotta take it down a notch and maybe don't lose your mind on a player from time to time. That said, I still can't believe the coach came out and flat out admitted it. I don't think this story would have really picked up any steam if he didn't admit it, instead he recruited against himself. This is out there for every transfer to see.
Could have done with the NIL talk. It's getting old at this point but every coach complaining about NIL money needs to figure it out. Probably why we're seeing the NCAA try to set up the new rules where schools can pay players themselves. I know people like to freak out about the transfer portal but we also need to give it a year. It always felt like there was going to be a drastic reaction with guys playing longer than ever thanks to the COVID free year. Once that goes away, I'm curious to see the numbers.
But flat out admitting your fans hate players to the point of transfer? Bold strategy.
