If The Final CFP Spot Is Down To Texas And Alabama, There's No Debate To Be Had

I didn't think this would ever be possible, but it seems very plausible at this point that the SEC could be left out of the College Football Playoff. And if the final spot in the Playoff is between Texas and Alabama, there shouldn't even be a discussion.

I understand and don't even necessarily disagree with the argument of putting the four "best" teams into the CFP rather than the four most deserving. But the committee has never done it that way and there would never be a worse time to start than in this instance. If Alabama and Texas played again next week, the Crimson Tide would almost certainly be favored and would probably win. But if ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a merry Christmas. Those two played this season — in Tuscaloosa, no less — and Texas won by two scores. Case closed.

If there's any discussion for Bama's inclusion whatsoever, it would be between the 12-1 Tide and 13-0 Florida State without Jordan Travis, but Bama is not more deserving than an undefeated Power Five team, either. There are more than a handful of teams that are better than FSU right now, but that's not enough to get into the College Football Playoff.

Bama just got the best win in college football this season, but it also lost to the team it's likely going to be fighting for a CFP spot. That's a tough break, but you should have won that game at home if you wanted to guarantee a seat at the table.
