Merrimack's Coach Rightfully Blasts Refs For Screwing Over Mid-Majors During The Regular Season After He Got A Bullshit Technical Against Georgetown

I love this from Joe Gallo because he's 100% right. Last night we saw Georgetown do, well, what we're used to Georgetown doing. Close game at home against a mid-major they have no business being in a close game with. Anyways in a two point game, less than 2 minutes to go Merrimack got called for a technical foul. Why? Joe Gallo threw his towel in the air over his shoulder.

Seriously.

That's it. Take my word for it. There's not a clip out there somehow for me to put in here, but anyone who watched the game saw it. It was nothing.

Another game, another ref ruining the sport. It's the biggest problem with this sport. We have refs, who we know by name, calling too many games in a week and frankly having no idea how to ref a game. The biggest games are marred by refs being inconsistent. Hell, just look at the Purdue/Tennessee game at Maui. That was atrocious and the players couldn't adapt because no one knew what was a foul. The worst part?

There's no punishment for refs being awful. I know, I know. They can 'not advance' to call NCAA Tournament games. But, come on, anyone who watches the sport religiously knows it's the same group of refs no matter what happens during the season calling NCAA Tournament games. They don't have to answer to the media. They don't have to explain themselves. It's bullshit. If they want to be part of the games, they should have to answer. Just like we freak out on 19-year olds for doing media and not answering shit the way people want them to, refs just skate on by with a pool reporter and no real words answer.

Now, is it a bit of a stretch to correlate this with NCAA Tournament upsets? Probably. It's a completely different setting, but this is far from a new theory. Guys with a pedigree get calls. People at home tend to get calls. It's just bullshit that refs don't have to answer about it. Especially when it really cost Merrimack the game. They had a chance and this is how it ended:

How do you miss that layup?

Either way, Gallo has every right to be pissed. That technical doesn't happen to a Big East coach at Georgetown. That technical doesn't happen 99% of the time. But it happened to him with under 2 minutes to go. It's absurd. All I ask is for refs to be held publicly accountable when they change a game. Like Gallo said, they took it out of the kids hands late in the game.
