I Am Starting To Talk Myself Out Of The Bears Drafting A Quarterback

After 32 starts and a 6-26 record I am confident that Justin Fields is not "the guy". He's not ever going to be a quarterback that makes you feel like you have a chance to win any game simply because he's on your team. That is my definition of a guy. There are very few of those in the NFL. If you think that you absolutely need to have one of those guys to win a Super Bowl then by all means...roll the dice and re-start the clock on this entire rebuild by trying to find that guy in this draft.

My gut, eyes, and balls say that there isn't one of those quarterbacks in this draft. Caleb Williams seems like he isn't the sure-fire prospect he was heading into this year. Drake Maye hasn't looked like a bonafide franchise guy either. There is NOTHING that sets a franchise back further than swinging and missing on a QB at the top of the draft. If you're drafting one of those guys in the top 5 he MUST be better than Justin Fields. If there's any doubt about that the Bears should kick the can down the road on the QB and just improve the roster. Maybe trade back from 1 to 3 and try to pick up another pick or two in the early rounds. Fields isn't going to be one of the best in the NFL. He might be able to grow to a guy that can get you to the playoffs with the right team and system around him. He could be a QB you'd rank in the 10-15 range. That might have be the best thing for him and the Bears.

Get a new coach who can design a game plan for the players on the roster, command respect, and create a culture. Draft two guys in the top 5 that instantly make your team better. Get Marvin Harrison Jr and an impact guy on either side of the line and spend that pile of free agent money on Jaylon Johnson, an Eddie Jackson replacement, and hope that the team improves with a new HC.

I am kind of shellshocked by this team though. I don't think there is a clear path for improvement. I don't know if they can find a QB to take the team to the next level. It's almost a "devil you know" situation with Fields. If someone designed an offense for his skills and he played consistently how he played against the Lions that might be good enough. I am not sure any QB can have a future here. Like most of us
