App State Ends James Madison's Perfect Season On One Of The Most Controversial Calls Of The Year
The storybook day and season weren't supposed to end like this. James Madison's perfect season came to a screeching halt with an overtime loss to Appalachian State, but it wasn't without controversy. The final play of the game was ruled a touchdown and stood after review — every replay angle was terrible — but it appeared that the receiver could have fumbled through the end zone before he ever crossed the goal line.
Whatever was called on the field there was going to stand, but what a brutal way for the Dukes to have their undefeated season come to an end. And the OT loss came after JMU converted a 4th and 18 and got a two-point conversion in the final minute. Nothing but pain.
It's obviously very possible the final play of the game was correctly ruled a touchdown, but you could also convince me the NCAA made a call down to Harrisonburg once that went to review to make sure that game ended in a Mountaineers victory. The Dukes were never making it out alive when the game was in the refs' hands. Real shame.
Regardless, let them bowl.
