Here’s Why The Swifties Want Dan “Big Cat” Katz’s Head On A Spike

By none other than podcast mogul and Barstool Royalty, Dan “Big Cat” Katz. Damn, it really do be your own sometimes. 

Here’s the thing. I understand this clip is intended to be a joke. We all know that. Is it also a bad, weird, horny joke that was made with the intent to upset people online? Yes. Dan may disagree, or maybe he’s too far into the bit to see his way out, but that doesn’t matter. What matters, is that the Swiftie Hive has been hit in a major way and I think it’s important to understand why this video now has 35 million views and counting, with 10k quote tweets calling Dan a gross piece of shit. 

In this case of viral Taylor Swift news, I happen to have a first hand experience with the perpetrator. Is he totally annoying when he constantly tries to rile me up when it comes to anything I feel passionate about? For sure. But he compliments the passion and encourages it, which is a good thing when you work for Barstool. Do I think he’s an actual garbage person who would say something like this and mean it? No. The guy pees his pants for fun. He pays a lot of the bills around here and half the company followed him to Chicago, so he can’t be all that bad. The biggest question - do I think this podcast clip, made with the intent to make people mad online, is a reflection of his actual character? Absolutely not.

“Kelly, please, the freaks online are out of their minds. It was CLEARLY A JOKE. He said he’d even settle on an over the pants hand job!” Yes, yes I can see you all in my replies. Let me let you in on a little secret - I know. I understand all of it. I see it! I see the intention! Was it executed well? I think the QT’s answer that for me. Unfortunately, for you to understand the SWIFTIES, you’re going to have to take a little trip down memory lane with me (you’re gonna LOVE this)……

Back in the year of our lord 2019, Taylor Swift did an interview referencing how she was treated by the media as a whole as far back as 2012. She explained how it feels to be diminished down to who you’re dating, endless slut shaming done by the media (which has happened FOREVER), and how it worries her to see it happening to other artists too. Taylor’s entire career she has had to battle the stigma of being a “slut,” “only caring about her ex boyfriends,” and “being crazy” because of the songs that she’s written. So much so, that in November of 2016, on the heels of the Kim and Kanye FAKE phone call, Taylor disappeared from the public eye for an entire year. She would literally hide in suitcases to leave her house without being seen. She came back with a bang, released Reputation, and the rest was history. She was completely reborn with a new attitude and confidence that said “fuck everybody, I’m a star, you can all kiss my ass.” Naturally, the girlies LOVED it.

Now, fast forward to today. Taylor Swift is the most famous woman on the planet right now. There simply is no arguing that fact. She’s spilling over into every pool of pop culture and right on cue, everyone has an opinion about it. For the Swfities - seeing “jokes” about sex when it comes to Taylor, brings us back to that time where things fucking sucked for girls. I’m not saying it’s much better now, but as I’m sure you know, 2012-2016 was PRIME TIME for some of the most disgusting treatment of successful (and any, really) women online. I’d like to think we’ve all moved past that, and CAN make a joke or two, but sometimes, it strikes a nerve. We don’t want to go back there! We don’t feel like laughing! We don’t want to make jokes about Taylor and sex, because we want to show her that we respect her for who she is, not for who she has been with. It’s hard to laugh when you’re still not over it. Does that make sense?

Anyway, if you’re still reading, you’ve got your "I’m Not A Douche Bag" star for the day. Dan told a bad joke to make people mad and boy, did it! We’ll survive. We will also be doing a full sit down (interrogation if I have my way) with Big Cat on Taylor Watch next week. It will be VERY unserious, fun, and we will all grow and learn together. Somehow.
