Last Night The New York Mets Sank To A New Low And Summed Up Their Season In One Play

I actually defend the New York Mets more than most people do. I understand that this year’s team has been a complete disaster, but I don’t believe it indicates a trend. I might be very, very naïve to feel that way. With that said, it’s undeniable to act like this Mets season hasn’t been anything other than an overwhelming failure. But in the second half, I feel like they haven’t really bothered anybody. The writing has been on the wall since the trade deadline. They’ve already kind of hit rock bottom. I was wrong—the play I just shared with you as one of the ugliest things I’ve seen all year.

You know that you fucked up when the opposing team's announcers are laughing in your face as the play is going on. A play like this is also a scorekeeper's nightmare. Just based on what I saw, it looks like we had a double steal, a wild pitch, an E2 on the catcher for the errant throw to third base that allowed the run to score, and then I believe we had an E7 on the left fielder, which allowed the runner to advance to third. I could be wrong. They may not have called an error on the left fielder, but it's a cluster fuck of a play nonetheless.

I'm a Detroit Tigers fan, so I have a lot of experience covering teams that were out of it by May, but there is something so depressing about these September games. Football season started, and nobody's watching your baseball team unless they're in the heart of a playoff chase. September baseball is a month of watching teams bleed out. I'd argue even the players don't want to be there.

A complete and utter lack of fundamentals is the number one sign of a shitty baseball team. Not all rosters can are stacked with talent, but being able to catch and field the ball is something you learn in Little League. I'm OK with human error every so often. It's part of the game. This kind of Yakety sax shit just drives me nuts. I'm not even a Mets fan in this play pissed me off, but I'd be lying if I told you I didn't laugh.
