"Fuck You, Ump" Or "Ump, You Suck". This Chant At Citizens Bank Park Is America's Next Great Debate

At first we had the white-and-gold dress or black-and-blue debate. Next up there was Yanny vs Laurel. And now we have "fuck you, ump" or "ump, you suck". Just a few all-time brain busters that initiated endless debates with the true answer never really being settled.

While I desperately wish the chant here was "fuck you, ump", it certainly sounds more like an "ump, you suck" the longer you listen to it. You can definitely hear hints of both of them in there, though, depending on what you're looking to hear. Honestly, there was most likely both of them going on at the same time. And both chants would be 100% justified after what went down yesterday.

Alec Bohm had every right to lose his shit over that call, and the 40,000 in attendance at Citizens Bank Park also had every right to fire up a good ol' fashioned "fuck you, ump" or "ump you suck" chant. With that being said...I actually think this is a great reason why the MLB should NOT make the jump to robot umpires anytime soon.

Don't get me wrong--it's certainly annoying as all hell when umps get the call egregiously wrong. But there's something special about thousands of people coming together to chant in unison about how much that guy sucks. You don't get a chance to really experience that level of collective hatred elsewhere in life. If the MLB switched to robot umpires, we'd lose that entirely. Sure, you'd get the right call all the time instead of getting rung up with the bases loaded on a pitch that practically grazes your dick. But that's a small price to pay to be able to get that chant going.

All I'm saying here is that officials in all sports get the call wrong. It's a part of the game. And part of that is also all the fans coming together to hate the everliving shit out of the officials. I just don't think we should be so quick to take that away from ourselves.
