Sydney Sweeney Is Confirmed To Play Spider-Woman In Sony's Offshoot Universe

Sony has been working on 'Madame Web' - the latest installment to their offshoot Spider-Man villainverse (featuring Venom, Morbius, and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter) - for quite a while now, and Dakota Johnson was cast as Cassandra Webb/Madame Web immediately, but Sydney Sweeney's role has been unconfirmed and highly speculated about for months after multiple set photos leaked....

Sweeney put an end to all the rumors today, though, and revealed to Variety that she will be playing Julia Carpenter aka Spider-Woman in 'Madame Web'!

Julia Carpenter was Marvel's second Spider-Woman (after Jessica Drew) and debuted as a villain during the initial 'Secret Wars' run in 1984, but she's since been written and rewritten as a hero - and along the way, she even takes over for Cassandra Webb and becomes the second Madame Web. I don't know if they'll go there in this movie, but I wouldn't be surprised considering the team-up.

Now I know a lot of you are asking, "Who dafuq is Madame Web?" - and allow me to (kinda) answer that for you....

Madame Web is a Spider-Man character created by Denny O'Neil and John Romita Jr in the 80s, usually shown as an elderly woman wrapped in literal webs, who is a clairvoyant/psychic that helps Spidey out. That's about as much as I can tell ya.

I believe this movie is rumored to be set before the Tobey Maguire movies, and it may revolve around Cassandra Webb and Julia Carpenter attempting to hold the multiverse together to make sure that Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man. It probably WON'T mention/relate to the MCU in any way, shape, or form, however.

Michael Keaton's Vulture appearing in a few of these movies' post-credits scenes is the closest we've gotten to that, but even those moments feel like a half-assed way to connect things.

I don't have high hopes for this movie, and doubt Sydney Sweeney will ever suit-up in the iconic Julia Carpenter black/white outfit….

….but as a man, I'm a fan of Sydney Sweeney, so I wrote this blog.

P.S. Here's some pictures of Sydney Sweeney….
