It Took Rick Pitino About 15 Seconds To Solve The Conference Realignment Issue With One Tweet
Well that's just about the most intelligent take on Conference Realignment that I've heard yet. Can we just let Rick Pitino run the show? Because Coach just solved the issue and got it all out in about 15 seconds. Additionally, great point about restaurants. Rick Pitino certainly knows restaurants, just Google it if you need more information.
But in all seriousness, when the dust finally settles, this has to be what happens, right? I mean, I get that all the conferences and TV networks are looking at the outrageous amounts of money they can make on College Football Saturdays, but are we really going to have Maryland's women's Field Hockey team fly to Eugene, Oregon for a match in front of thirty two parents at most? We're sending Rutgers baseball to Seattle, Washington for a Wednesday game? In no way is that sustainable, but also, in no way is that needed.
The Olympic sports, and honestly every single sport except for Football, should continue to operate the way they have been. Let the football teams, who play once a week and on the weekends, do whatever they please. But can we just keep the old school conferences together for everyone else? The travel, loss of regional rivalries, extra money being spent, class time being missed, etc etc etc actually matter for people on the Cross Country team. I get that no one on Ohio State's football team came to play school, but the girls on the softball team have to. And now we're making the take a 5 hour flight to Los Angeles on a Thursday instead of being able to stay in the Midwest?
The only question is that if football does break away, do they take all of the money with them? I would like to think not because at the end of the day, they're still a part of the university. Clearly if football wasn't able to fund the other sports, they would all just fold. But if we can allow football to make 50+ million dollars for the University each year by playing whatever schedule the TV networks want, then the rest of college sports can remain the same and will probably be even better off for it.
