A Win For Common Sense: The NCAA Announces Tournament Expansion 'Is Not Imminent', Because It's The Dumbest Idea In Sports
I didn't think I'd be so happy about NCAA Tournament shit in July, but here we are. I honestly thought the NCAA would expand the Tournament because they care about money. But this continues to be the dumbest idea in all of sports. We don't need expansion. 68 is just fine. 64 is perfect, but 68 is fine. We don't need average teams making the NCAA Tournament because there's 96 teams or whatever it is. We already have more than enough teams in the NCAA Tournament.
Oh and the reasoning being there's more Division I teams? Here's a simple solution. STOP ADDING TEAMS. We don't need 363 teams in Division I basketball. I don't understand why we keep letting teams move up. There has to be a number in mind and cut it at that. Shit do a season of relegation to send down some of these teams that consistently win like 7 games a season.
Again, it's simple here. If you want to make the NCAA Tournament do 1 of 2 things. 1) Have a good enough regular season so you auto-qualify or 2) win your conference tournament. Every team has the same chance to get in. Mid-majors, sure, they don't have as strong as resumes to get in with the auto qualifying, but if they truly are great, just win the conference tournament. In fact, put it on conference tournaments to send their best teams. We're seeing mid-majors get creative with how they do their conference tournament, whether it's homecourt advantage or giving byes. Do that instead of expand the NCAA Tournament.
I love how simple the NCAA Tournament is. 4 regions, 16 teams in each (fuck the First Four). There's just something about it that warms my heart. So don't even think about touching it. Don't even think about changing a thing. It's also the perfect length. Back-to-back Thursday-Sundays of games and then Final Four Saturday and championship Monday. Oh not to mention there's already conference tournaments with a win-and-advance scenario.
LEAVE IT ALONE.
