Absolutely Nobody Is Talking About One Of The MCU's Best Shows

Marvel's 'Secret Invasion' has been running for three weeks now on Disney Plus - starring the likes of Samuel L Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Don Cheadle - and absolutely nobody is talking about it.

Giphy Images.

It's a good show, too, and way more mature than we're used to from Marvel - but you'd be hard pressed to find even a superfan to keep the Skrull discussions going week-to-week.

Unless those superfans are me and Clem, of course….

I'm not sure exactly how we've gotten to this point, but there's obviously multiple factors that could be at play.

For starters, there's been almost zero promotion for this show. The premiere snuck up on us like a literal secret, and outside of a couple commercials during Jeopardy, I've seen nothing about the first ever Nick Fury-led MCU project. It's all Barbie and Oppenheimer everywhere I look otherwise.

Hell, even 'The Flash' and 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny' (a couple of catastrophic box office bombs) got more promotion all around! Why Marvel didn't think this serious, well-acted, political thriller was worthy of the same push they gave some sorta silly shows like 'She-Hulk' and 'Ms. Marvel' I'll never understand.

Still, I thought the strength of the cast and word-of-mouth from MCU diehards would carry the show through a shitty promotional tour - but NOPE! Every time I recommend the show to anybody, they're shocked it's currently streaming and wind up tellin me they'll probably get around to it when all six episodes are out.

Nobody cares! MCU mainstays are gettin killed off and revealed as aliens left and right and nobody cares!

I hate to say it, but maybe the whole "MCU Fatigue" we've been hearing about for years is finally kicking in?

I would always tend to think the "fatigue" line was a bunch of baloney, because the truly great movies in the genre (like 'Across the Spider-Verse', 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' or 'The Batman', for example) always break through and impress at the box office, but this series is great and it means nothing!

Maybe there's "multiverse fatigue" or something? Marvel has put out a LOT of content in this phase, some of which has been very hit/miss, and I would understand a scorned audience not rushing to each and every show now. However, an issue arises when people are not only not rushing to this (WELL REVIEWED) show, they're not interested in it at all!

I think less shows and more 'special presentations' like the 'Guardians Holiday Special'/'Werewolf By Night' are the answer, as the audience can then invest less time in a (hopefully better) story that cuts out any of the bullshit side stuff necessary to stretch a series out. That's just me though.

So what do you think went wrong with 'Secret Invasion'?

Did Marvel's swing-and-miss on advertising set the show up to fail, or did Phase 4's inconsistency doom it from the start? Could this just be a case of audiences not caring about a superhero-less story? What happened?

Clem and I will be back with a recap of Secret Invasion Episode 3 and break this topic down tomorrow….
