Brad Stevens Did It Again By Bringing Sam Cassell Back To The Celtics To Join Joe Mazzulla's Staff

Once we learned that Joe Mazzulla was staying on as the head coach of the Boston Celtics, the question then became who the hell was he going to have on his staff. Ime was bringing in his guys which meant there were going to be several spots to fill. I think most fans were hoping for a guy with NBA coaching experience, perhaps a former player that would be able to connect with the guys on that level, much like Ime did.

Well, not only did Brad address that, he did it with someone who knows what it takes to win a title as a member of the Boston Celtics. Sam Cassell checks off pretty much every box we were looking for in an assistant for Joe. He's experienced, he's repeatedly been considered a legit candidate for head coaching gigs, players seem to love him and he's a defensive guy. Not only that, but I think we'd all like to see an improved Tatum midrange right? Well..

Given what we've also seen from Stephen Silas hanging around the Auerbach Center, you gotta think that tweet from Shams/Woj is coming eventually. That would be a solid get as well. Overall though, it's hard to not love the Cassell hire. I figured he would have just stayed with Nick Nurse, but maybe he wanted nothing to do with the Sixers after the fired Doc and then didn't hire him. Whatever, their loss is the Celtics gain I guess. Wouldn't be the first time.

I also have to be honest about something else. It's very enraging that I am writing an assistant coach hiring blog and not a Celtics about to start Game 2 of the NBA Finals blog. The whole thing still makes me sick to my stomach. Just win at home. That's all it took. Ah well, at least 2023-24 is off to a good start. Now we just wait and see what else Brad has up his sleeve.
