Will Ferrell's New Movie, "Strays", Described as "Homeward Bound But With Drugs and F-Bombs" Looks Awesome

(Universal) A subversion of the dog movies we know and love, Strays, directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) and written by Dan Perrault (Players, American Vandal), is a hilarious, R-rated, live-action comedy about the complications of love, the importance of great friendships, and the unexpected virtues of couch humping.

Featuring a powerhouse comedic supporting cast—including Grammy winner Josh Gad (Beauty and the Beast), Harvey Guillén (Puss in Boots: The Last Wish), Emmy nominee Rob Riggle (The Hangover), Brett Gelman (Stranger Things), Jamie Demetriou (The Afterparty), and Emmy nominee Sofia Vergara (Modern Family)—Strays is produced by Picturestart founder and CEO Erik Feig (Luckiest Girl Alive, Cha Cha Real Smooth), by Louis Leterrier (director Fast X, The Clash of the Titans), by Dan Perrault (Players, American Vandal) and by Lord Miller partners Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part) and Lord Miller President of Film Aditya Sood (The Martian, Cocaine Bear).

The film is executive produced by Jessica Switch, Nikki Baida and Julia Hammer.

I'm a simple man. I love going to the movies. Even if the movie sucks, a large thing of popcorn, a half-empty or more movie theatre, and some peace and fucking quiet for 3 hours is one of the great things in life.

I also love animals, more than people, especially dogs. Will Ferrell is one of my favorite human beings alive and I am flat out fascinated by how his brain works. And I also love Will Arnett and Jamie Foxx.

Combine all these things together, and I think we have a fucking hit on our hands, people.

Especially if this dog, the star of the show, Reggie, really does bite Will Arnett's dick off.

Not to mention, I'm fairly certain this is the world's first R-rated talking dog movie. So I'm in on just that alone.

Will Ferrell did a presser at CinemaCon this week and had this to say-

Will Ferrell brought out an adorable fluffy friend named Sophie to hawk his very R-rated new comedy, “Strays,” at CinemaCon on Wednesday. The comic actor and the border terrier teamed up to portray Reggie, a dog who is abandoned by his deadbeat owner (Will Forte). But Ferrell made it clear who has top billing.

“My career is going to go on for a long time, but this is the peak for you,” Ferrell said, as the camera operator at the cavernous Colosseum kept cutting back to Sophie’s soulful eyes. If there’s a “Strays 3,” Ferrell joked, the 8-year-old Sophie would need to be recast. “That’s an eternity in dog years…and that’s not even Hollywood years,” he said.

Also, how can you go wrong basing your story on a movie as great as "Homeward Bound"? Remember this movie from when we were kids? Talk about the complete package.

Dogs. Feel good story. Humor.

I remember I saw this movie as part 2 of a double feature (why don't they do these anymore at movie theatres?) and vividly remember it being one of the best days of my life.

As for “Strays,” the movie looks like an outrageous, barrier-pushing comedy — think “Homeward Bound” with drugs and f-bombs. The trailer features incredibly cute dogs tripping on mushrooms in the forest and doing bloody (unintentional) damage to the rabbits who live there. There’s also a bizarre Dennis Quaid cameo, with the actor looking on as one dog tries to save his puppy friend from the clutches of an eagle while they soar high above the treetops.

“That is the craziest thing I’ve ever seen, and I’m Dennis Quaid. And Dennis Quaid has seen some shit,” he says.

"Strays" comes out Friday June 9th in theatres everywhere.
