OH HELL YEAH! There's A Dodgeball Sequel In The Works And Vince Vaughn Is Returning

Deadline.com: Vince Vaughn will return to star in (and likely produce) a sequel to his hit 2004 comedy, Dodgeball, scripted by Jordan VanDina (The Binge), which is in early development at 20th Century Studios, Deadline has learned.

I normally shudder when I read that Hollywood is making a sequel of a movie I love 20 years later. Especially a comedy as iconic as Dodgeball. But if you're going to do it then do it right and bring back the guy who made the whole thing go. Vince freaking Vaughn.

There aren't a lot of details about the sequel just yet. They don't even know who exactly is going to direct it. But we do know it will continue the story of Vaughn's gym and the idea came from Vaughn himself.

All that’s known about the sequel, in terms of plot, is that it will continue the story of Vaughn’s prize-winning gym owner. Serving as the basis for VanDina’a script is an idea from Vaughn.

Thurber previously addressed the possibility of expanding the world of Dodgeball, either via new films or TV series, in a 2021 interview with Deadline. “You know what — never say never. I never thought about Dodgeball as a series, but that actually might be fun,” he said. “I’m really proud of Dodgeball — it’s my first film and something people still really like it seems. I would say never say never, and it would have to be the right take on it. But yeah, maybe.”

Dodgeball came smack dab in the middle of a golden era for comedy movies. Back when studios were fine making $120 million profit on something we could all get stoned and watch together. Now every movie has to have profit in the billions and be a part of some kind of nerdy universe where you have to of see 16 other movies to understand why this asshole is venturing across the solar system for revenge. No thanks.

That's good old fashioned comedy. And give me Ben Stiller in a fat suit covered in chicken grease. Are we even allowed to do that any more? Is that against the PC rules? I have no idea but for my money this is the type of shit we have been missing in cinema for quite some time.

Think about that run of comedies in the early 2000s. Dodgeball, Superbad, The 40-Year Old Virgin, The Hangover, Knocked Up, Shaun of the Dead, Napoleon Dynamite, Step Brothers, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Zoolander, Wedding Crashers…

I could go on for another 50 titles but you get the picture. You can throw on every single one of those movies right now and laugh your ass off. And Vince Vaughn was a huge part of that.

So here's to hoping Vince still has some heat in his fastball and doesn't let us down. I want a comedy renaissance in Hollywood and it's going to take Vince, Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller, and a bunch more of the old guard to make it happen. Because if they mail in a sequel to a single one of these movies and it flops the studio will never green light one again.

We're all counting on you, Vince. Don't fuck this up.
