The Color Of Gloves Has The Lacrosse World On The Verge Of A Civil War
We thought it was going to be the PLL vs the MLL. We thought it was going to be field lacrosse vs box lacrosse. We thought it was going to be lax bro culture. But turns out the one thing that is going to cause a full fledged civil war in the lacrosse world is the color of gloves.
That's because last weekend when Ohio State and Maryland were knotted up at 11 a piece, one of the most absurd calls in lacrosse history was made. Right before a faceoff with just over 2 minutes left to go in regulation, Maryland head coach John Tillman mentioned to the refs that Ohio State FOGO Matt Fritz was wearing a different pair of gloves than the rest of the team. They were still team issued gloves, but just a different set.
Now at some time throughout the course of lacrosse history, they made a rule against doing that. Why? I haven't the faintest idea. It's not like the color of the gloves is going to give anybody a physical or tactical advantage in the game. It makes no impact at all. But it's still a rule, and one in which Maryland decided to pull out. Maryland was given possession of the ball, and even though nothing ended up happening before the end of regulation, the Terps went on to win in overtime.
There are some folks out there who just chalk this one up to gamesmanship. Who think Maryland just did a great job of using the rules to their advantage. There are other folks out there who think this was a move of the upmost cowardice and jackassery.
