Did the Saints Get Enough for Sean Payton?

After what feels like months of speculation, Sean Payton has finally found a new NFL home.

Payton is headed to the Denver Broncos to try to resurrect Russel Wilson's career. The Saints get the 30th pick in the 2023 Draft and swap a 2024 3rd for a 2024 2nd rounder.

Did the Saints get enough for Payton?

Here are my instant reaction thoughts....

1) Thank God Payton is going to the AFC

I will always be a huge fan of Sean Payton and did not want him anywhere near playing the Saints. Thrilled he is far far away from the NFC South.

2) The Saints Receive the 30th Pick in 2023 Draft

The Saints absolutely had to get a deal done this offseason for Payton as he will no longer be under contract next year. Obviously the 30th pick is not ideal but it is still a 1st round pick. They also now have two 2nd round picks in 2024. This is not going to set the world on fire by any means but it is still a positive.

3) Has there ever been a bigger upgrade at head coach than Nathaniel Hackett to Sean Payton?

Not that I can recall. Hackett was beyond a disaster and did not even get through one season. Now Denver has a Super Bowl winning head coach who will be ready for a fresh start after sitting out a season. I cannot imagine how happy Denver Broncos fans are right now.

4) Can Sean Payton save Russel Wilson's career?

This is the 250 Million $$$ question. I am a little surprised Sean Payton is going to Denver because I heard the Saints had no interest in Russ last offseason and hated his tape. But clearly Payton thinks Russ can still cook.

The Broncos do have solid weapons in RB Javonte Williams and WRs Courtland Sutton & Jerry Jeudy. They also had a top 5 defense. They could be a playoff team immediately if Wilson can play even average. However, they are in a pretty loaded AFC West with Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert.

Payton better save Russ because the Broncos will not have many draft picks the next couple of seasons.
