Texas Has, Without A Doubt, The Best Helmets In College Football

Sporting News Archive. Getty Images.

Those Texas Longhorn helmets are CLEAN. Just a lovely white with their trademark burnt orange looks so nice. They've looked so nice through the years. From Ricky Williams breaking the D1-A rushing record and stacking up yards

To Vince Young prancing into the end zone of the Rose Bowl

In a modern game where we're seeing Oregon have a million different unis and things get trendier, these still hold up. However, it wasn't picked in the 1.1. slot in the latest Dog Walk Draft featuring Will Compton, which was the College Football Helmet Draft. There were two rules:

1) You had to be in a conference to be chosen, so no Notre Dame

2) You could only pick one helmet from each conference.

Here is how things went down:

Here's how my grades shake out:

Team #1: B- (left off poll)

LSU is a brutal pick at 1.1. It's definitely a cool helmet, but like they mentioned on the show, the SEC is just so dang deep. Taking an SEC school 1st overall is awful value from this veteran drafter. Penn State in my mind doesn't have a cool helmet. It's just white. These is a line dividing the two sides doesn't do it for me. It's very hard to find a plainer helmet than that. Clemson I kind of like, especially in Round 3. Orange, White & Purple are a cool combo. Kansas and Oregon both have more modern, cool helmets that feel trendy, but I like.

Team #2: A-

Texas is the pick at 1.2. No doubter for everything listed at the top. Ohio State is tricky, because the helmet is plain, but the stickers really make it. Assuming stickers are cool, I love this pick. Speaking of orange earlier, Tennessee Orange really pops on the helmets and uniforms, so I love that pick in the 3rd as an SEC school. There was some controversy around Pitt and what helmet is their true helmet, but if it's the blue and yellow in the graphic that is way underdrafted - H2P. And I know Washington's W drew some ire, but I actually like their helmets and it's a good pick for the Pac-12 in the last round. Very strong draft here.

Team #3: C

Alabama's helmet is also very plain, but it least they have the numbers on them. And they're not just plain white. The maroon is iconic, so I get why it's a 1st rounder. But again, another SEC school early. Florida State Round 2 is my favorite pick of their round as the Seminole helmet will always look cool. UCLA is a bit polarizing and I'm not a huge fan, but the uniforms are sick. West Virginia has a neat stacked logo which I've always kind of admired. 4th Round I can live with that. Iowa State (not correctly displayed on the graphic), but I was never a big fan of the Iowa State Cyclones logo.

Team #4: A-

Michigan is a strong 1st Rounder in a conference it dominates on the helmet (not always on the field). Oklahoma I've always liked how the O and U overlap and it's a nice sparkling distinct red. Ole Miss is not the classic light blue, but the navy blue, which I still think is a good pick, but maybe a tad overvalued in Round 3. UNC has a color named after them in Carolina Blue, so a great pick in Round 4. Utah Round 5 might be my favorite pick of the Draft. Just insane value in the final round which really bookends this draft for me.

Team #5: B-

I do really like the Miami helmet 1st round, no arguing there. But USC Round 2 I hate. I've never liked the USC helmet. I don't have a problem with the school and I bet it was fun as heck going there, but the helmet just doesn't sit well with me. TCU Round 3 has a little too much going on for my liking. I do really like the big red N of the Nebraska helmet. Georgia is so similar to the Green Bay Packers and Grambling that I don't love it, but they are an elite program. I'm just not a fan of the helmet as an iconic one vs. all the other options.
