Boston Dynamics, The Company Famous For Making Robots That Look Like They Could Kill You, Pledges Not To Make Robots That Can Kill You

(Axios)--Several robotics companies, including Boston Dynamics, are pledging not to support the weaponization of their products and are calling for others in the industry to do the same, according to a letter shared first with Axios.

Why it matters: Robots, like drones before them, have a wide range of peaceful and even life-saving uses, but can be turned into war-fighting machines, too.

Details: The open letter highlights the erosion of consumer trust in robots as among the reasons not to allow them to be used as weapons.

  • "We believe that adding weapons to robots that are remotely or autonomously operated, widely available to the public, and capable of navigating to previously inaccessible locations where people live and work, raises new risks of harm and serious ethical issues," the companies said in the letter.

Bruh...c'mon

I don't know a ton about Boston Dynamics if I am being honest. I am sure they are doing world class robotics and engineering that can help with surgeries and advance humanity in all sorts of ways. I am sure that is what is happening. Having said that…every single video that gets released is of a robot that will absolutely be used to kill people someday. A quick twitter search will give you nothing but Terminator nightmares (side note: I used to have a recurring nightmare about the Silver metal melting bad guy from Terminator II when I was a kid).

Just a smooth ass dancing robot with a backpack. A backpack that can definitely be turned into a flamethrower pack

Pretty good innovation from something that could smash 30 heads in a matter of minutes to seemingly autonomous killing machine robots

Robot dogs that can open doors like a raptor in Jurassic Park and then rip your limbs off

I do think I could kick that things ass

They didn't make that last one but they are trying to.

I love the pledge though. "We totally aren't going to add weapons to our weaponized robot killing machines…having said that if we sell an Army of these robots to the Pentagon and they want to outfit them with tactical nukes, that's their prerogative".

If I were a gambling man I think I would list these things at 100/1 as the cause of the apocalypse. Humans would be 1/5. Asteroids and other natural disasters somewhere in between, and then these things 3rd. Only a matter of time before AI fucks robots and creates a super intelligent robot species that ends us. Fiction becoming reality and it doesn't matter what decree or pledge Boston Dynamics puts out. They're going to kill us all.
