There's Not One Damn Thing Wrong With Multiple SMU Football Players Sitting Out The Rest Of The Year So They Can Transfer

A little bit of background here. Multiple (2-4) SMU players are sitting out the rest of the year to 1) preserve their redshirt and 2) transfer. It's smart, logical and the correct thing to do. That said, people are losing their shit over it because those people will never understand college sports. They want it to be this version they've had in their heads that were never this way. Yeah, there was never a transfer portal but if you think college athletics were 'pure' you don't really know shit about the history. Just google Sam Gilbert for those who think Wooden was clean.

That's not the point. The point here is we're going to see this pop up from time to time now. That's in part thanks to the new NCAA rule that has transfer portal windows. You can't just enter the portal at any time, there's a window after the season ends.

Then there's this fact. SMU has a brand new coach. I'm not going to sit here and tell you what was said in the offseason from coach to player because no one knows. But maybe there were lies from one. Maybe there's a difference in how they are going to play. Players have a limited amount of time that they can make an impression to get to the NFL. SMU might not be it which is fine. This is ESPECIALLY the case under a brand new coach. Sit out, let him play other guys behind you in the depth chart and look for a new team.

Oh that's also why the coaching staff is FINE with it. I hate using capitals all the time, but it was worth it just to prove a point. This isn't a concern. This isn't some 'death of college sports' that I know people will love to talk about. It's guys smartly protecting a year while not completely derailing SMU.

I say it all the time. I have no problem with players transferring, especially if there's a coaching change. I also get that people lose their shit the moment a player enters a transfer portal. I just don't care enough for that. Let a player decide what they want to do. Welcome to college sports where you have coaches making millions to survive and guys trying to find the best way to make millions as players.
