Doug Gottlieb Retracts His Report That Freddie Freeman's Agent Did Not Inform Him of a Final Offer From the Braves

After saying several months ago that Freddie Freeman fired his former agent when he found out about an undisclosed final contract offer from the Braves, Doug Gottlieb has officially retracted that report and now says that didn't actually happen.

Gottlieb was being sued by agent Casey Close for libel after initially reporting that Close did not tell Freeman about the Braves' best and final offer because he knew Freeman would accept it. Freeman fired Close immediately following the Dodgers' series against the Braves in Atlanta in June, making the report that Freeman would have found out about such a thing at that time at least relatively plausible.

Close said in a statement he now considers the matter closed after Gottlieb's retraction.

I just want to know who gave Gottlieb such a supposed story that he felt comfortable running with it. I would guess it would have to be someone pretty in the know for a non-baseball reporter to put something like that out there, but maybe that's giving Gottlieb too much credit. Anytime you have to say, "... a review of the lawsuit filed against me," it's safe to say mistakes were made.

Whatever happened, it seems like this may finally be some kind of conclusion to the Freddie Freeman saga. I'm sure there will be emotions every time Freeman comes back to Atlanta, but now every part of the story is pretty much wrapped up and everyone can move on.
