Watching The Kids At Brett Baty's High School Go NUTS After Baty Hit A Home Run In His First Major League At Bat Is Reason Number 951,584 Why Baseball Is The Best

Last night I asked the age old question "How can you not be romantic about baseball?" after watching Brett Baty take Jake Odorizzi yard in his first at bat as a Major Leaguer. Not only that, but Baty's family were lucky enough to be in the stands and lost their goddamn minds.

Baty's sister in particular was excited, as her lips clearly stated

The guy next to her with the orange shirt was excited, even though there's another word for that...

Anyway, I went to bed after the Mets beat the big bad Braves again and thought how it was such a delightful moment for the Batys to experience as a family before dreaming of meaningful games in September, let alone OCTOBER!

Then I saw this video of kids from Baty's high school watching a guy that used to walk their same hallways get his first AB in The Show and it just made everything that much more beautiful.

How awesome is that? Watching a local kid make good is one thing. Watching that local kid go yard in his first AB and make Jake Odorizzi a footnote in baseball history is beautiful. Is it fair to say that these kids didn't think their dreams were truly possible until they saw Baty go big fly? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe fuck yourself.

But it was just a real nice moment after what I imagine was a pretty solid pizza party before the game (I'll guess two cheese pies, a pepperoni pie, and a meat lovers pie. Why four pies for a smattering of high school kids and likely some coaches? Because everything is bigger in Texas). You know a kid is special if Keith likes him after Game 1.

If those kids' parents really wanna make this moment memorable, they should buy a shirt to commemorate all the bombs Brett The Met hits for the Amazins.
