Washington (CNN)After months of internal debate, the Biden administration has offered to exchange Viktor Bout, a convicted Russian arms trafficker serving a 25-year US prison sentence, as part of a potential deal to secure the release of two Americans held by Russia, Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan, according to people briefed on the matter.
These sources told CNN that the plan to trade Bout for Whelan and Griner received the backing of President Joe Biden after being under discussion since earlier this year. Biden's support for the swap overrides opposition from the Department of Justice, which is generally against prisoner trades.
Trade deadline season is above us. USA and Russia trying to work out a trade would be like the Yankees and Red Sox trying to get something done, but it sounds like we are making progress towards getting two Americans home. That's good. All it costs us to get them is a man with the nickname "The Merchant of Death" who was arrested like 10 years ago in Thailand by Interpol for supplying weapons to known terrorist groups. Everyone knows that only the US Government is allowed to give arms to known terrorist groups.
Russia out there saying that Viktor Bout was wrongfully accused and convicted. Comrads...c'mon. Fucking look at him
A face like that only has one profession. If someone asked me to guess what this face does for a living my absolute first answer would be Russian arms dealer. Straight out of central casting. He looks so much like a Russian arms dealer that if they do eventually make a movie about this guy Viktor then the studio has to have him star as himself. The only reason I think the US should do the trade and release is because sometimes things are just out of your control. This man, Viktor, didn't have a choice. He had to become an arms dealer.
With a face like that, the arms dealing profession chooses you.
