Apparently Nobody Else Falls Asleep At The Barber

Now I wouldn't call that an ideal bed, but I do really love taking short micronaps in those things. See every time I get my haircut, which is typically about a 35-40 minute process, I end up dozing off multiple times. Typically it'll be for somewhere from 5-25 minutes total. Time of day doesn't matter at all. It could be an 8am haircut on a Saturday morning or a 5:30pm haircut during the week. Every time, without fail I fall asleep for some duration of the cut. As was the case today for my 3pm cut on this lovely half day before Memorial Day Weekend. Later in the evening, I wondered out loud on twitter if this was in fact weirdo behavior or perfectly normal. I don't typically see other people in the Barbershop sleeping, but I never feel weird doing it either, so I just wanted a temperature check.

I started getting a bunch of people being on one side of this argument, so I figured getting an official poll would probably even things out. What's crazy is that with twitter polls you can't see the results until you vote, so there is a certain amount of trust in the number as it's essentially a blind study. The results were staggering.

Over 18,000 votes and only 1.4% of people fall asleep every time they are in a barber's chair. 7.4% have ever fallen asleep. I've never seen a more one-sided poll in my life!

I'm not sure exactly what it is that just puts me out. If it's the calming buzz of the buzzer, the occasional white noise of the blow dryer, the movie that's usually on TNT playing at a very low volume that I've barely heard of, that my glasses are off, the fact I have no interest in starting a conversation or what. But every time I sit down in that chair, it's lights out for at least part of the haircut. For the 92.6% of you that have never tried it, I'd recommend it. It's quite refreshing!

Sweet dreams guys.
