Awesome Draft Moment: Jets Area Scout Gets The Honor To Call Player Telling Him They're Taking Him After He Discovered Him

This is so damn cool. Joe Douglas continues to impress me and the Jets absolutely dominated the Draft this year. He's took a bad situation and continued to makes moves to give his team more picks and he really hit it out of the park this year.

But what makes this moment so cool is that Area Scouts are mid-level guys in organizations. They're not GMs or Director of Player Personnel, or Director of College Scouting. They're a cog in the wheel. You'll likely never know who your team's area scouts are. They're the ones that live on the road. 200+ days a year. They'll have an 'area' like the SEC or the Pac-12 and basically live over there on the road going to schools. And not just for games either. They want to talk to the strength coaches, the video guys, the equipment guys to get a read on guys practice habits and character. So they spend their whole year coming up with a recommendation on a guy that hopefully fits into what the team needs and matches up with where the team is picking.

The stars aligned for this area scout, Chris Nolan and Joe Douglas gave him the distinct honor, usually reserved for a GM or Head Coach of making the call to the prospect to let them know they've been drafted. I got chills watching this. Nolan is a young guy, probably around 30, a football lifer just 8-10 years out of school. Living out of hotels and racking up thousands of miles on rental cars and eating a ton of fast food making not a ton of money. It's not glamorous at all, but like Bucs GM Jason Licht has said, "scouts are the lifeblood of the organization". So for Nolan to get this chance was awesome to see. Shoutout to Joe Douglas for giving his scout his moment.
